City of St. Albert and Shaw Launch Free Public Wifi Partnership

The City of St. Albert has entered into a non-exclusive agreement to permit Shaw Cablesystems Limited (Shaw) to provide Shaw Go WiFi Internet services to Shaw customers from City facilities. While the Shaw Go WiFi service is only available to existing Shaw Internet customers, this agreement contains the provision of free “Muni WiFi” services to the general public where Shaw has installed Wireless Access Points.

This agreement is another example of the City’s commitment to advancing projects that are foundational to its SMART City efforts, particularly in partnership with its public and private sector partners.

“St. Albert is very pleased to support Shaw in enhancing the ability of our residents and visitors to connect” said City Manager Patrick Draper. “The commitment of the private sector to collaborate with communities to deliver on these priorities is critical, and we will continue to welcome and explore ways to do so in support of Council’s goals.”

Shaw has expanded its Shaw Go WiFi service throughout the Edmonton area, including St. Albert. The Shaw Go WiFi service is only offered to existing Shaw Internet customers. Shaw customers can now connect a number of mobile devices, depending upon their service plan. The existing Shaw Go WiFi locations within St. Albert include businesses and some public facilities:

Under the new agreement, Shaw will expand the number of Shaw Go WiFi and Muni WiFi access points to other City of St. Albert facilities to be determined These will likely include City Hall, Servus Credit Union Place and Fountain Park Recreation Centre. There is a possibility that these services may be offered at outdoor locations as well.
